Is It Wrong To Have Micro Pigs As Pets ?

Micro pigs are much smaller than a standard farm pig and weigh 9oz, about the size of a tea cup when they are born.

Paris Hilton has one, the Beckhams have two and it’s been widely reported that the goody bags at the Golden Globe include vouchers for a micro pig of one’s own.

Standing as little as 12 inches high at maturity, these pocket-sized porcines are the latest celebrity pet craze.

They are fantastic fun, extremely intelligent, highly social – just love human and animal contact – very CLEAN and  make amazing pets.  They can be easily house trained and will sit on your lap while you watch TV so you can scratch their bellys. They will “talk” to you and have you giggling for hours.

“There is no allergic reaction because they have hair and not fur.”

But there are some who are not convinced a trend for having pigs as pets is a good thing.

Kirsty Bayley, pig herd manager at the Institute for Animal Health, is getting an increasing amount of calls asking about the phenomenon.

“They are farm animals, they shouldn’t be kept as pets. They are not overly domesticated. They need to be kept in groups. They are not solitary animals.”

   So long as the animal is given adequate and appropriate housing, training, love, food, and such, why not? I’ve been involved in animal rescue (mainly Great Danes) for many years — I’d prefer that people be educated about any animal they’re going to purchase and not “create” an overabundance, but quality of care and life is what is most important.
